Whoever says summer break is stress-free, doesn’t know summer at my house. So far, since school let out two weeks ago, I’ve been on a whirlwind family vacation to New York City (12 of us), run the Spartan AT&T Stadium in Dallas (and earned a World Championship Coin) and made some hefty purchases like a new air-conditioner, new car for middle son and paid the tuition bill for oldest’s third year at a private college.
Money is flying out of our hands at a pace faster than the Nike Sub-2 Marathon attempt, which did fail by 1 second a mile but was still smokin’ fast. With Father’s Day around the corner, I need a few thoughtful gifts that will appeal to the sporty dads in my life, but won’t bust the bank. Check out these Spartan-worthy ideas: Continue reading →
Heading out on a summer vacation is my favorite time of the year, adventures abound, the weather is warm and the worries are few. The only worry that might be creeping into your conscious is falling off your normal diet and exercise regimen and returning home with a few extra pounds or diminished exercise performance. Nobody wants to call these souvenirs! However, with a little mindfulness, you can enjoy the extra little indulgences that a well-earned getaway offers, sleeping in late or a slice of the best local pastries “ever,” and still come home looking and feeling great.
Mother’s Day 2017 is almost here, how are your honoring the special woman in your life? I’ve rounded up six of my favorite gift ideas for the fitness-focused, active mom – perfect for your mother, daughter, sister, or other important female in your life — including YOU!

As a growing-older yet still goal-oriented athlete, I decided it was about time to give the finger to my chronic hand pain. Stiff hands and sore thumb joint was making it increasingly difficult to enjoy and compete in the sports I love, like obstacle course racing and Crossfit. Even yoga, which had once been a source of relaxation had become stressful as I could no longer splay my hands out flat on the ground without significant discomfort.
But, thankfully, I found Curamin® Stop Pain Now, a safe, effective, non-addictive herbal formula that has gotten me back in the literal and figurative game. Read on to learn more about how this #1 selling brand can be your first line of defense against chronic pain. Also, check out my Pre-Workout Hand Stretches to Lessen Pain for even more relief.
More than 90 percent of adults snack between meals and that’s a good thing, if done right! Most dieticians recommend eating a couple healthy snacks per day, given overall good food choices are being made. Selecting protein rich snacks can help improve satiety and promote weight loss or maintenance. But for athletes, protein-rich snacks also have an effect on workout recovery and future performance -protein is the fuel that supports muscle repair and growth and provides long-lasting energy throughout the day.
Because of protein’s role in these areas, it’s the only macro this number avoiding girl counts. Time and time again you’ve heard me say I aim for 25 to 30 grams at every meal and also the same amount within 30 minutes of an intense workout or long run. However, for snacks after a light workout, in the middle of a regular day, or just because “I’m hungry,” I take the protein consumption down a bit at snack time – 12 to 14 grams per snack is perfect for me. My new favorite protein snack is the Quest Beyond Cereal Barsthat I got at Vitamin Shoppe. Read on to find out more about high-protein snacks and these yummy new bars from Quest. Continue reading →
This post sponsored by Pollo Tropical, but all opinions & enthusiasm are my own.
You’ve heard me say it a zillion times . . . I’M HUUUUUNGRY . . . I need tasty, nourishing food and I need it FAST! Well, this weekend I discovered Pollo Tropical, a quick island-inspired dining spot that filled the void in my tank without draining my pocketbook or making me wait so long as to faint from hunger. And, HURRAY, it is right across the street from the running trail at Lady Bird Lake and several downtown gyms– how I’ve never seen it before, I don’t know (I guess I was running to fast, haha).
While I wasn’t in need of a post-run meal the day I stopped in, I was sticking to my overall clean-eating plan as I’m in the middle of 5 weeks of competition for the Crossfit Games Open and two back-to-back Warrior Dash and Spartan Races Now is no time to eat junk . . . . food is fuel!Continue reading →
Cooking is my thaaaaang! I’ve been going hard in the kitchen since 4rd grade, teaching myself how to make everything from buttery cinnamon muffins to tater tot casserole. Flash forward four decades and I’m still in full meal-making beast mode nearly every day. Although, this time as it all goes down a little “healthier” thanks to my role as a clean-eating cooking coach, corporate recipe developer and personal chef (haha) to my family with three teenage boys.
But sometimes this hardworking mama needs a break and that’s where Snap Kitchen saves the day for breakfast, lunch, dinner and snack time. I can count on this convenient healthy meal shop to cure my hangries while keeping me on track with nutritious foods to fuel my running, workouts and active lifestyle. Read on to find out how you can make eating clean at every meal easy thanks to Snap Kitchen. Plus, I’m sharing some of my favorite tips for eating clean and having a giveaway for a $25 Visa Card so you can get your mouth on some of these meals yourself.
