The fall season can take a toll on my daily workout routine, if I let it. Busy back-to-school schedules, dwindling daylight hours, pre-holiday preparations and perhaps just a bit of laziness make it harder to keep to my regularly schedule sweat sessions.
But, thank goodness autumn weather is perfect for exercising outdoors, so I keep my fitness clothes in the car trunk (along with Lorissa’s Kitchen™ and Honest Tea® ) and make it a priority to move and groove wherever I might be in “wait mode” – like a one of my three kid’s many sports practices. Read on to find out five easy ways everyone from Soccer Moms and Football Dads can squeeze in an impromptu workout this way and also get a deal on the sponsor products. Continue reading →
Almost six years ago, I started experimenting with making my own edible race fuel. There weren’t as many options on the market back then, and I also liked the control I had over ingredients and flavor when making energy gels, jellies and chews from scratch – not to mention saving a ton of money.
Today I’m sharing my recipe for Watermelon Beet & Chia EnergyBlocks that are surprisingly easy to make and take advantage of the inherent health and performance benefits of the featured ingredients. Read on to get the recipe, nutrition info and details on how you can use these chews in your next marathon, triathlon, obstacle race or other endurance event. Continue reading →
Time to hit the trail . . . trail mix, that is! August 31st is National Trail Mix Day and I’d bet my last nut that you’re as hungry to celebrate this salty-sweet day as me!
I’m sharing some past trail mix inspired recipes (think cups and bars) along with a more traditional, but oh-so-insanely good jumble of nuts, dried fruit and chocolate things that I call the Nuts About Chocolate Mountain Trail Mix. Continue reading →
This post sponsored my Bard Valley Natural Delight Dates. However, all content, opinions and enthusiasm are my own!
Growing up, Dad had a joke in our house that cookies eaten outside of normal dessert consumption hours were called “Breakfast Circles,” or “Energy Rounds.” This soon became my line of defense when Mom caught me with my hand in the cookie jar. Thank goodness, my Date & Protein Chocolate Cookies need no explaining away!
These little rounds of goodness are loaded with quality and sustaining energy my family needs to smash through the day’s goals – both physically and mentally. My youngest teenager and I are the athletes of the family and my older two boys are the “math-letes” – bodies and brains BOTH need healthy carbs (backed by a bit of protein) to optimize performance. My cookies, made with absolutely no refined sugar (only Medjool dates and a few other smart ingredients), make the perfect snack to fuel running, workouts, sports practice, and racing to the head of the class! Read on to get the recipe and all the delicious, body-boosting benefits: Continue reading →

Not all snack bars are created equal. And, with an entire grocery store aisle devoted to these popular between-meal munchies, it can be a confusing, tongue-clucking task deciding which bars to buy and which to avoid – some can contain more fat, sugar and calories than a candy bar! Not to mention concerning chemicals, additives and fillers.
So, whether for a gym bag, lunch box or office drawer, read on to find out how to make healthier choices when it comes to snack or nutritional bars. Also, don’t miss my giveaway at the end of this post for a 2-month supply of Superfood Bars from Nature’s Path. Continue reading →
On the eve of a road trip, I get anxious about being cooped up in the car, whether it’s just for hours on the road or 14. A little bit of claustrophobia combined with dread over what feels like a sedentary death sentence – I cannot tolerate locked knees, a cricked neck and what feels like roots growing from my butt into the bucket seat. Plus, I need to EAT and with my mind on auto-pilot, thoughts of snacking typically don’t vanish until satisfied!
Bu typical gas station food is really not my thing, eating the junk food just makes me feel worse. But, whoohoo, I just found out that 7-Eleven can keep me fueled up in a healthier way — they sell one of my favorite protein items, Quest Cereal Bars! With only 110 calories, 12g protein and a much more nutritious ingredient profile than most convenience store snacks, I can keep my tank filled for the finish! Read on to find out more about Quest Cereal Bars, get my Road Trip Rules for People Who Can’t Sit Still and enter a GIVEAWAY! Continue reading →
Heading out on a summer vacation is my favorite time of the year, adventures abound, the weather is warm and the worries are few. The only worry that might be creeping into your conscious is falling off your normal diet and exercise regimen and returning home with a few extra pounds or diminished exercise performance. Nobody wants to call these souvenirs! However, with a little mindfulness, you can enjoy the extra little indulgences that a well-earned getaway offers, sleeping in late or a slice of the best local pastries “ever,” and still come home looking and feeling great.
