Whoohoo, spring is almost officially here . . . and we’ve been experiencing lots of warm weather here in Austin, just in time for Spring Break, SXSW and all the outdoor fun that goes on in this great city.
After being cooped up indoors over the winter, spring really lifts my mood and I’m sharing my favorite Five Ways to Feel Fit & Fabulous this Spring. Read on to find out how I’m walking on sunshine!
Move Outside: Spring is the perfect time to get outdoors, the weather is warming and the sun has come out to play . . . and stay. Take your workout from the treadmill to the track, the gym to the jungle gym, the yoga studio to the sidewalk and enjoy some free vitamin D. Even if you don’t have an “official” sweat session planned, a nice walk is a great way to boost your fitness and mood.
Drink More Water: With the temperatures on the rise from now through the end of summer, spring is a great time to get in the habit of drinking enough water. Drinking adequate water, the amount varies by person and activity level, will help to maintain fluid balance in the cells, prevent muscle cramping and fatigue, improve the appearance of skin, curb appetite, and more. Check out my post on the 50 Shades of Pee to learn more about hydration and how much water you need.
Eat More Veggies: If I sound like a mother, I am! You can never go wrong by adding more vegetables to your plate, — and the more colors and variety, the better! Eating different types of vegetables ensures that you are getting the array of vitamins, minerals and nutrients you need for optimal wellness. Plus, vegetables are healthy complex carbohydrates that are an important part of the diet that fuels your body and brain. At every meal, I aim to fill half of my plate with seasonal veggies – it’s one of the ways I feel fit & fabulous. Another plus, you can eat a LOT of vegetables, without racking up a high calorie count.
Take a Time Out: Like any other season, spring can bring stress – work deadlines, children’s school and sports activities and seemingly never-ending yard work. Reduce stress and keep spring easy-breezy by taking an official 10-minute break a couple times a day to practice yoga, meditate, or just “be.” It’s one of the Ways I Balance Fitness and Life This down time can take place wherever you are – at home, the office, the park, or even in the car (parked, of course)!
Clean Closet & Treat Yo’ Self: Spring is a time of renewal and fresh starts. I’ve started a routine of Spring Cleaning to rid myself of all the clutter and chaos that has accumulated over each passing year. My closet is one of the biggest culprits, I tend to hold onto everything whether I plan to wear it again or not! So, my new rule is that if I haven’t worn something in two years, it gets donated to charity. I think two years is a good time span, it allows me to have ignored a piece for an entire year and then decide to start loving it again the next year . . . or not. No longer will things hang in my closet for 5, 10 or 20+ years as they have in the past. If my connection with the garment is due to a strong memory, I slip into it, model, and snap a photo . . . and then transcend from the tangible “thing.”
That being said, a clean closet always has room for a new outfit to keep style fun, functional and up-to-date – I always find myself treating myself to prAna. Their clothing is progressively engineered, durable, comfortable and versatile and makes it easy for me to be active EVERYWHERE. I often wear their clothes to the gym or yoga class and then straight to lunch with friends with no lack of style. Also, their travel dresses, yoga pants (guaranteed to NOT be see-thru), swim suits and cute tops are always packed in my suitcase when adventure calls – check out my post on 5 Tips for Fit Travel (with prAna)
I’ve really been enjoying my latest two pieces from prAna.com – the Kornelie Tank and the Steph Jogger. I also have a huge drawer full of their yoga pants — check out the video to learn how their New Fit works for so many body types, does not become see through when you bend over — they are designed by active women, for you! What percentage of the week do you live in athleisure or yoga pants? Do you have any big plans for Spring Break? What are you doing to feel fit & fabulous this spring? Please share in the comments – XOXO, Jennifer
If I could live in yoga pants/athleisure all the time I would! I love prAna. The clothes are so comfy! You look great in them and nice handstand!
thanks! I pretty much do live in athleisure all the time – haha Though one day at church, I got the eyer roll from my son who didn’t like my compression sock and prAna dress combo (hey, I had just run 20 miles) haha
I will forever have a problem with the water thing but — thanks to the stevia flavor drops and what not, I am getting at least a TINY bit better!
I didn’t know you weren’t a big water fan!
I rarely wear anything but yoga attire unless I have somewhere to go that requires donning something else. I am all about comfort these days.
