I like to end my day cozied up with a cup of tea and a good read, it’s a great way to relax after 16 hours or so in go-go-go mode. I’ve never been one much for novels, but a knowledge-boosting non-fiction book can keep me turning pages into the wee hours. Check out my favorite Best Healthy Living, Diet and Cookbook Reads in March 2018.
These new-release books are packed with useful how-to, tips and advice that have helped me optimized my healthy lifestyle even more. Read on to learn more.
Green Enough: How to Eat Better, Live Cleaner and Be Happier (All Without Driving your Family Crazy) by Leah Segedie. In this book, Leah uncovers the truth behind the food and household products that are marketed to us as “all-natural” and healthy but are really packed with harmful chemicals and toxins. There is so much information and easy baby steps you can take (from food, food storage, furniture, grooming and more) that will add up to big changes in health and wellness of you and your family. This is one of my favorite Best Healthy Living, Diet and Cookbook Reads this month. Actually, I’ve written a whole post about this friend’s new book, your can READ IT HERE.
Mason Jar Lunches: 50 Pretty, Portable Packed Lunches (Including) Delicious Soups, Salads, Pastas and More by Jessica Harlan. Why is lunch in a glass jar so fabulous? Oh, lemme count the ways – beautiful, customizable, frugal, portable and environmentally mindful. Personally, I make them all the time, and didn’t think I could be surprised with new twists on my favorite healthy, on-the-go meal. However, Harlan delivered – including lasagna in a jar, poke sushi bowl, buffalo chicken salad, charcututerie stack and more! Beautiful photography in this adorable book!
Food Sanity: How to Eat in a World of Fads and Fiction by Dr. David Friedman. If you follow health trends, you’ve likely noticed that there are dozens of “diet” or “best ways to eat” for weight-loss, performance, longevity or whatever. Paleo, Vegan, Keto, Raw, Mediterranean . . . it can make your head spin. There are also just as many opinions on which diets work and which not so much in medical circles and media reports– it can be so confusing! After becoming frustrated with all this conflicting reporting, Friedman (a holistic health expert and practitioner) shares what is fad and fiction and provides his own common-sense-meets-science approach to eating.
Baking Soda for Health: 100 Amazing and Unexpected Uses for Sodium Bicarbonate by Britt Brandon. It’s not the flashiest addition to my Best Healthy Living, Diet and Cookbook Reads for March 2018, but the one I’ve already used and dog-earred the most. I knew baking soda had uses beyond baking cookies or de-funking fridge odors, but who knew there were so many! This practical guide shares how to use baking soda (aka sodium bicarbonate) for all-natural healing, wellness and beauty benefits. For example, it can take the sting out of bug bites, whiten teeth and reduce heart burn – you need to get the book to find out the other 97 non-toxic ways to use baking soda! I love how this book has helped me live a greener and more frugal lifestyle by saying adios the expensive, chemical-laden household, health and beauty products I had been purchasing for so many years.
Cookin’ Skinny: A Collection of Low-Calorie, Low-Carb, Low-Fat and High-Protein Recipes by Helen Martnson. If you are looking for an inspiring weight-loss success story (she’s down 140lbs!) and easy, healthy recipes to replicate for your own health journey, Martnson’s book is a must read. From blueberry pancakes to power salads and spinach meatballs, each recipe uses easy-to-find ingredients and includes supplemental information such as portion sizes, calories, and grams of protein.
Hardcore Carnivore: Cook Meat Like You Mean It , by Jess Pryles. If you love meat, this book is meant for you, covering slow-smoked barbecue ribs to yeehaw-worthy cowboy steaks. Even as much as I love beef (and you know I DO), Jess, whom I’ve brushed elbows with in beef industry circles, shares dozens of equally delicious recipes for chicken, game, pork, lamb. I personally advocate eating enough protein, from a variety of sources, timed optimally through the day – beef and other animal proteins are nutrient-dense picks that I enjoy pairing up with a plate full of veggies! Jess’s book has given me lots of protein inspo!

Some of my favorite recipes include Gingerbread Overnight Oats, the Bahn Mi Burger (above) and Chocolate Peanut Butter Waffle Sandwiches!
