Wind Down & Restore with Post-Workout Yoga for Athletes

If you’re anything like me, I bet you’re a runner, a weightlifter, an obstacle course racer or some other type athlete who thrives on a tough sweat session but not so much the attention to mobility and cooling down that should follow. Over the last two years, I’ve come to realize that yoga is a fantastic and fun way to stretch out, unwind and realign the body after working out. Plus, it can be done at home in 15 minutes or less – meaning, “I have no time for that,” is a pretty lame excuse!

Post Workout Yoga For Athletes

Forget the hassle of heading to a yoga class after the last mile has been run or burpee been thrown down, Grokker, an online resource of home workout videos, has a relaxing post-workout yoga practice for athletes that really works to help ease muscles and the nervous system into cool down mode immediately following a high-intensity exercise event. Actually, Grokker has 1,500+ fitness videos for to choose from, I just thought you’d like to get a taste of this one I keep putting in my queue – Post Workout Yoga for Athletes.

What I like about this athlete-centric practice is that it gently stretches and opens the body to optimize the workout I just finished. Each pose helps my taxed muscle tissue start to repair while I’m still warm and grounds my energy after being in “beast mode” for a couple hours. Because runners, weightlifters and other athletes tend to have tighter muscles than uber-bendy yogis, I appreciate how this video provides simple modifications so that I can attempt each pose without getting injured.

I couldn’t reach my hands together on the other side, but the Grokker instructor showed me how to modify this pose with a yoga strap.

Home workouts and yoga videos from Grokker round out my fitness and keep me competing at the top of my game.

Plus, did I mention how easy it is to do a Grokker yoga workout at home?! Just log in, search the library and hit the play button – or schedule a reminder for a later date and time!  Somedays, I barely have time to fit in a quick run, let alone finding time to drive to a yoga class in crazy Austin traffic. There’s no denying the social benefits of exercising in a gym or group fitness class, but often – very often – that is not convenient, or even possible. Grokker video workouts have been a solid addition to my widely varied fitness toolbox – there are all types of workouts and even healthy cooking episodes to suit my current interests and abilities.

Here are some other reasons to check out Grokker (in addition to receiving a 14-day free trial and 40 percent discount).

Variety: A library full of 1,500+ premium video classes in popular genres like yoga, fitness, meditation and healthy cooking. Videos last 10 minutes to 1+ hours and are available in beginner to advance fitness levels – you will never get bored!

Quality: Grokker’s videos, made in-house, are beautiful and inspiring to watch – the expert fitness instructors also know what they’re talking about and will wisely teach and lead you through all the steps.

5 Minute Plank Workout + Prevention R3 Summit

Planks can be compared to eating your veggies or brushing your teeth. You don’t have to like doing it, you just need to get the job done — and it only takes a few minutes per day. Just like vegetables or proper oral hygiene, planks are a great way to look good, feel good, improve your overall health — and attract new friends!  Ha ha!Jennifer Fisher plank outside

hood to coast planking with emilyHolding the plank position may look like child’s play, but don’t let the simplicity of this no-equipment, body-weight exercise give you a false sense of bravado.

Planks are hard and humbling. I’ve seen planks that can make grown men and women cry.  Recruit a friend to make the pain more fun!

Core strength, balance and flexibility are just some of the benefits you’ll gain from practicing a plank – plus, you’ll stand taller, straighter and prouder! Who am I to judge if you want to pull up your shirt to show off new found abs and obliques. In addition to the abdominals, other muscle groups used include those in the back, chest, shoulders, and neck. Getting into the plank position helps to loosen up hamstrings (lordy, I need that) as well as calves and arches of the feet. Planks also demand concentration and a focus on balance to keep from toppling over, especially in some of the advanced variations.

5 Minute Plank WorkoutBeing able to hold an abdominal plank for two minutes (with good form) is an indicator of good fitness.  Remember to tuck in rear end push belly button up, keeping a straight line from the top of your head to the back of your heels. Try my 5 Minute Plank Workout either in the morning or at the end of your next gym session. It’s just 5 minutes so no excuses, plus you’ll love the results after a few weeks! If you can’t hold the planks for the recommended amount of time, just lower into a resting position until ready to tackle the next one.

Or, try the whole five minutes at once, no variations to break it up — just go for it!

Also, I wanted to tell you to save the date! Prevention Magazine’s third annual R3 Summit is returning to Austin on Jan 15-16. I’ve been the first two years and can’t wait to go back to this health and wellness conference to learn new ways to take action when it comes to my health and happiness ((R3 = Revive, Refresh, and Reinvent).

Henna Tattoo R3 Summit AustinR3 is an award winning 1 ½-day long experiential event taking place this year at ACL Live at Moody Theater. Guests enjoy a wide scope of wellness workshops, fitness classes, tastings and health and beauty consultations – there is something for everyone and keep an open mind because you may discover something amazing that you never thought was for you – last year I was blown away by the Reiki healing and the artistry of the women doing henna tattoos.

But, you know I was also all about the clean eating demonstrations and meeting the celebrity chefs. I also “competed” in a wild tuna cook off!

4 No-Cook Jicama Wraps for Dog Days of Summer

These No-Cook Jicama Wrap ideas are the perfect meal solution for the dog days of summer.

I have a jicama wrap for you . . . and a jicama wrap for you . . . and a jicama wrap for you (I’m pointing to all of y’all)!  I’ve been having this love affair with jicama for a while now, you’ve probably seen some of the posts here and on Instagram– this is one of my favorite, Three No-Cook Jicama Recipes for Summer. I now have a new addition to the no-cook meal solutions — Four No-Cook Jicama Wraps!  It’s the perfect solution for the dog days of summer — and speaking of the “dog days,” check out my Lucy helping me with yoga!

I revisited this jicama obsession when I noticed that my grocery store started stocking jicama “tortillas” in their produce department. They are made in-house and sold in the convenience prepped veggie section – I did a little jump for joy when I first spotted them sitting there waiting for me. I’ve drooled over all the jicama “taco” recipes on Pinterest, but I’ve never been able to slice my jicama that thin (cause I’m not losing a finger on the mandolin)! Yay, now I have people that do that for me!

I originally made this collection of jicama tacos (or wraps or rollups – what does one call them?) to showcase the OPA by Litehouse™ Greek Yogurt Dressings.  I love those dressings, they taste so rich and indulgent but they have fewer calories than traditional dressings . . . and more protein, too!

Some of the perks of these jicama rollups – the are Paleo friendly depending exactly what you put on top; they are crispy, crunch and low calorie; and, whoot-whoot – there is no heating up the kitchen with the oven.

Quinoa, Tomato and Ranch Jicama Wrap makes a quick and easy summer lunch -- no cooking!Quinoa + Tomato Slices + Flat Parsley + OPA by Litehouse™ Ranch Dressing

Full disclosure on this one — the quinoa is cooked, obviously. It was leftover — use any leftover grain that you have like brown rice, wheat berry, couscous and so on!

Don’t forget to check out my past round-up of Three No-Cook Jicama Recipes for Summer.

Jicama is a root vegetable that tastes a bit like a mild apple. It doesn't oxidize when cut -- the perfect crunchy ingredient for salads and summer no-cook recipes.

5 Yoga Poses for Better Skin + Beauty Products I’m Loving NOW

5 Yoga Poses for Better Skin

Not only does practicing yoga have great benefits for your body and mind, but yoga also can help improve skin health by lessening stress and flushing toxins from the body. Some poses are better than others at helping you attain that magical glow – incorporate these five yoga poses into your workout routine and then reflect on your new healthy complexion!

Five Yoga Poses for Better Skin

Breathing Exercise: In seated position with legs crossed and arms at sides or gently resting on knees, practice deep rhythmic breathing slowly inhaling in and out ten times. Drawing in oxygen through the body will help release toxins and keep your motor running smoothly.

Legs Up The Wall: To perform this simple inversion, lay on back with rear touching wall and legs extended straight upward. This pose gets blood pumping to all parts of the body and has long been touted as an anti-wrinkle pose.

Seated Twist:  Sit with one leg bent and the knee behind you and the other bent and tucked in at the crotch. Place opposing arm on forward knee and other arm behind for support, twisting torso, neck and head as far as possible .This pose focuses on the digestive system which is vital for moving toxins out of the organs; remember to breathe deeply.

Headstand: Using a forearm or tripod position, extend legs over heart into headstand. Balance against a wall if needed. This position circulates the blood, especially to the face in a rejuvenating manner. While it is good to practice headstands every day, use caution to stay upside down for too long – this could be counterproductive to skin health by causing broken capillaries.

Plow: Lay prone on back with arms at sides. Extend legs upward and over face, optimally reaching the ground behind your head with your toes.  To modify, extend legs as far as possible and use hands to support back. This pose sends blood flow to the face and stimulates the hormone and metabolic system.

Some other ways I’ve been helping my skin, hair and teeth out are with natural products from NOW® Solutions.  You may be familiar with the vitamins, supplements and healthy food that NOW Foods makes to help people achieve optimal nutrition – but they also have a really great line of organic personal care products like moisturizers, shampoos, essential oils, home fragrances and more. All of the lotions and potions are made with a commitment to quality and  tested for potency, purity and safety — and never test on animals. There are no synthetic ingredients or yucky chemicals because NOW Solutions believes that nature provides almost everything we need to maintain the health and vitality of our hair, skin and nails — and so do I.

Here are some of the NOW® Solutions I’ve been loving lately (along with a few of their other personal care items):

Now Solutions Herbal Revival Shampoo and Conditioner

NOW® Solutions Herbal Revival Shampoo and NOW® Solutions Herbal Revival Conditioner: This invigorating shampoo and conditioner combines Horsetail Extract, Tea Tree Oil and Sea Kelp to help soothe and nourish the scalp.  L-Arginine and L-Cystine strengthen damaged follicles, giving hair a healthy shine and smooth feel – it’s perfect for my colored hair that tends to get damaged from styling tools! I also love how NOW avoids harsh chemicals and synthetic ingredients – who wants to put that yuck (like SLS or Parabens) on your hair?

Now Solutions Almond Oil -- great for skin, hair and even lessening dark circles under eyes!

NOW® Solutions Sweet Almond Oil – Vitamins A, B, and E, certain phytonutrients, essential fatty acids, and a variety of minerals make almond oil an effective natural moisturizer and skin protector.  Among its many varied used, almond oil softens and smoothes skin, removes makeup naturally with little greasy residue and helps add shine and moisture to undernourished hair. Perhaps the benefit I’m most interested in (and am testing out now), is the suggestion that almond oil can help reduce dark circles under the eyes and on the lid – simply apply lightly before bed and allow to work overnight for a few weeks.

Now Solutions Toothpaste, Biotin and Vitamin D cream

Now Solutions Toothpaste, Biotin and Vitamin D cream

NOW® Solutions XyliWhite™ Neem & Tea Tree Toothpaste – I feel good about brushing my teeth with this cool, minty gel toothpaste made with quality ingredients including 25% Xylitol – a natural ingredient that creates a healthy ph balance in your mouth and helps fight the bacteria which cause cavities (more about it here). . . . . Too much fluoride in your system can be a bad thing causing everything from brown spots on your teeth (dental flourousis) to allergies – there are even claims that over-flourinating can cause lower IQs, Alzheimer’s disease and cancer.

Biotin: Biotin is a water-soluble vitamin necessary for normal growth and body function.  Biotin is a key regulatory element in gluconeogenesis, fatty acid synthesis, and in the metabolism of some amino acids.  Alongside its role in energy production,  Biotin enhances the synthesis of certain proteins.  In addition, Biotin promotes normal immunity and plays a critical role in skin health – I notice a difference in my hair and nails!

NOW® Solutions Vitamin D3 Cream –  This lotion provides intense and renewing moisture to skin that is dry, damaged, cracked or just crying out for help.  Just 1 gram (about ¼ teaspoon) will help get your skin on the fast-tract to recovery with a balanced ratio of vitamin D (1000 IU), vitamin A (500 IU) and Vitamin E (50 IU). I’ve been using this with good results to keep my heels from cracking and to massage into rough patches of new skin where scabs (from obstacle racing) have fallen off.

What is your skin care routine and do you have major concerns — acne, wrinkles, etc? Please share in the comments!
