There is nothing more refreshing, relaxing and ridiculously genius than a Watermelon Margarita – especially, a Margarita INSIDE a Watermelon!
Work toward your daily recommended servings of fruit with this portable watermelon cocktail (or mocktail) and doesn’t dirty up any extra bar ware. Read on to learn how to make a watermelon margarita in a watermelon and simplify your Cinco de Mayo celebration this year!
While Watermelon Margaritas are amazing for Cinco de May parties, they also are a hit as barbeque beverages, cookout cocktails, or for any type of situation that requires a summer sipper – personally, I plan to enjoy mine floating on the lake in a ‘tube.
So, let’s get down to the fun and learn how to make a watermelon margarita in a watermelon! It’s surprisingly quick and easy and will really wow your guests!
First, grab a personal-sized watermelon at the market. These seedless mini watermelons range from about 3 to 7lbs each and I usually get one in the middle range for this watermelon margarita recipe. You’ll want to chill the watermelon overnight in the refrigerator . . . unless you don’t mind having a watermelon cocktail that’s room temperature!
The only equipment needed for this epic margarita is an immersion blender – a handheld stick blender that you can insert right through a hole you cut in the top of the watermelon. Cut the hole about 1-inch in wider than the diameter of the immersion blender head. Insert your knife downward so that you are removing the skin, the rind and some of the pink flesh (enough that you can get the blender situated down there).
Next step to an “In the Watermelon” Margarita is to start blending, it’s really a leap of faith until you get going – then you’ll how incredibly easy it is to blend up the watermelon flesh for a margarita IN the watermelon.
Once the majority of watermelon flesh is blended up, squeeze in the juice from 2 to 3 fresh limes. Next, you just pour in tequila and triple sec or other orange liquor right in the hole and stir up gently. The AMOUNT of alcohol is dictated by the size (and servings) or your melon and your tolerance to drinking! For reference, I used about ½ cup tequila and ¼ cup orange liqueur in my 4+ lb. melon – and we’ll say it was a 4-servings (or one giant) watermelon margarita.
Add straws and drink! However, ff you are not drinking your watermelon margarita right out of the fruit, then cut off the bottom of a small plastic cup to push down into the hole just a bit where it will serve as a pouring spout. You can pour into salted (or watermelon sugared) rimmed glasses this way.
If you want to make it a watermelon mocktail, simply omit the hard stuff and add a little more lime and maybe even some sparkling soda.

Learn how to use an immersion blender to create a shareable watermelon margarita IN a whole mini watermelon
- 1 4 to 5 lb. seedless mini watermelon chilled
- 2 to 3 medium limes
- 1/2 cup tequila
- 1/4 cup triple sec or other orange liqueur
- optional salt or flavored sugar for rim
-
If watermelon is wobbly sitting on the table, set on side and slice a small amount off (only skin and bit of rind) so that it sits straight when propped back up.
-
In top of watermelon, cut a circle that is about 1-inch in diameter wider than head of immersion blender. When removing circle of skin/rind, also take out some of the pink watermelon flesh (enough so that immersion blender can get down to start).
-
Turn immersion blender on, while holding firmly onto melon, and blend while rotating head around to liquify all the pink flesh.
-
Remove blender and, if needed, a bit of the liquid to make room for next ingredients.
-
Slice limes in half and use a lime juicer to extract juice right into watermelon.
-
Pour in tequila and triple sec or orange liqueur and gently stir around.
-
Add straws and drink OR, if serving in glasses, cut the bottom off a paper cup and stick down into the melon to create a spout to pour. Pour into four glasses, salted or sugared on the rim, if desired.
-
Note: Margarita yield will be based on the size of your actual melon. You may adjust the amount of alcohol up or down to accommodate. Also, you may omit alcohol and add the juice of one more lime to make it a mocktail!
