The Hatch are back in town! That’s right, it’s Hatch green chile season, that flavorful time of year when these amazing green chiles from New Mexico are in peak season.
I’ve got 101 Ways to Use Hatch Green Chiles – actually make that 102 with my new recipes this year, Hatch Green Chili Fries in the Air Fryer (or Oven). They are Paleo friendly and low carb thanks to a “breading” of almond meal and coconut flour and also super crunchy and quick to fix thanks to the Air Fryer (of course, they can also be baked in the oven). Read on to get this Air Fryer green chile recipes:
One of the reasons I like making Hatch green chile recipes is that they are typically a little milder than many peppers – although there ARE hot varieties to be found. However, most mainstream markets sell chiles that won’t burn your mouth off. When you see the tips of a chile turning red, that means it’s ripening to hot. You’ve been warned.
Making the green chile fries is super simple, just seed a pepper and slice into thin strips. Check the size of your air fryer basket and cut strips to fit (a few times I’ve had chiles too long to fit in)!
Next up is the dip and dredge technique to get the coating to stick on. For least messy results, use one hand for the egg wash dipping and one hand for the breading dredging! The coating isn’t your typical bread crumbs or panko – instead, it’s a mixture of almond meal, coconut flour, garlic powder, cumin and black pepper. The almond meal really helps it bake up crispy in the air fryer and also keeps the recipe gluten-free and paleo-friendly. It’s also low carb enough to fit into a keto diet.
Run those delicious Hatch green chile fries through the air fryer for 12 or so minutes and the result is so tasty and delicious. The chiles have soften and roasted a bit, and the crust is as crispy as it can be! If your air fryer is on the small side, you may have to do in two batches – or you can also cook in the oven on a baking sheet.
Serve with the dressing or dip of your choosing! Today I’m using leftover avocado ranch from my favorite salad place . . . but I also think would be delicious with my BBQ-inspired Low-fat Creamy Texas Dressing.
