Street Stylin’ – Iconic and Eclectic Austin Murals

I’ve been in Austin, Texas since pretty much the beginning. Well, not the very beginning, considering pioneers started settling in these parts around 1830, and I didn’t show up until 1967! Even though Austin is the state capitol, back then it was just a little college town – I even lived on UT campus with my parents for the first six-and-a-half years of my life. Street Art and Street Style in Austin

Today, Austin is the 11th most populated city in the U.S., and while many things have changed in these last five decades (growth of the tech industry, onslaught of insufferable traffic, endangered status of the Golden-cheeked Warbler), many things have stayed the same – namely, our mostly warm temperatures, laid-back culture, anything-goes vibe, and colorful street art scene. Tips (and Teas) for Sleep Deprived Runners

This post is sponsored by Celestial Seasonings but the content and opinions expressed here are my own.

Getting a good night’s sleep is important for everyone, especially those in endurance sports including running, swimming, biking and obstacle course racing. However, I became increasingly anxious, irritable, had difficulty concentrating and made rash decisions. I wasn’t seeing improvements in my runs and workouts and many days I wouldn’t have the muscle strength or endurance to get them done. My stress was out of control as evidenced by sky-high cortisol levels that would never level out during the day as they should. I knew I needed to do something about my “sleep hygiene” pronto. Creating a “calming” ritual by drinking a healthy tea in the evening, was one of my strategies. Read on to learn my tactics and tips for better sleep: Continue reading

20 Lighter Southern Food Recipes

It’s National Southern Food Day on January 22nd . . . that’s a thing, y’all! Traditional southern food is a reflection of who we are and where we came from, it’s what brings us together at family gatherings, holidays, special occasions and as regional collective. There are a lot of basic themes of southern food, but most is as unique as the mama that’s putting her spin on it. My “take” is to make healthy southern food based on the classic recipes, using fresh and “fitter” ingredients – I get a burr in my britches (and sometimes bee in my bonnet) when people assume you can’t make healthy southern food.20 Lighter Southern Food Recipes thefitfork.com
